About Peter Solis Nery’s “Dabadaba,” I am reminded of Thomas Mann’s “Death in Venice” novella. This film might as well be “Death in Dumangas.”

Mimesis aside, I was expecting some scorching love scenes since I would like to think that the title “Dabadaba” requires them, but I know Mr. Nery might have been pressed for time in further exploring the romantic (or even sexual, at that) relationships between Graydon and that beautiful boy; between that beautiful boy...

Peter Solis Nery presents “Dabadaba,” a five-minuter film shot in his hometown, Dumangas, Iloilo.

“Dabadaba,” which means flame in the Hiligaynon, tells of different human needs – flaming desires that are all interlinked to the four people in the story: One seeks for acceptance; another, for security; the third, personal satisfaction; and the fourth, only to be loved in return.

They undertake different circumstances to fulfill those needs so they can finally find what they...

Everyone is a critic.

Sabi nga ni Victor Ebert (film critique), “No great film is ‘depressing’. All bad films are.” At sa tingin ko, hindi kasama...

Why a short film? I don’t have much money to spare for my art, but I want my filmmaking to get off the ground. It’s been a decade long dream for me to be my own scriptwriter, my own director, my own producer.

Why five minutes? I actually planned for a 13-minuter, but with the footage I got, I’m now convinced it should, at least, be 30 minutes long. I got bored and tired editing, watching the same scenes again and again....

Two weeks later, it was made available in Kindle Edition, the digital text platform of Amazon.com, making it Nery’s first digital book.

Second, as the subject of Nery’s one-act...

It’s final: The French salon and English pub-themed writing and writers’ tete-a-tete runs May 1-5. Venue: Prima City, Dumangas, Iloilo.

Prima City is a three-story commercial building with a pool that’s owned by transgressive Ilonggo writer, Peter Solis Nery. Nery is now based in Los Angeles, California.

This is not your run-of-the-mill workshop where participants’ works are discussed by a dogmatic panel. We reverse the process: When you come to the workshop you come ready...

LOS ANGELES – SOMETHING original and exciting is underway. V Entertainment Group concocts an unusual show that will make you laugh out loud, and will keep you thinking after you leave The Pinoy Dreamgays.

This musical is an ensemble of performers who all came from live acts in lounges and bars. They are very interactive to the audience as they are very vocal and upfront. Their jokes are unique, and they have their own brand of humor, sometimes they are rated parental guidance...

EVERYDAY since February, a Hiligaynon tabloid, Hublas nga Kamatuoran (Naked Truth), publishes an erotic sonnet, a move that has earned it mixed reviews and more readers.

Sales of the newspaper in Iloilo City have improved, boosted by the popularity of the erotic sonnets among its low-income readers, said publisher Danny Fajardo.

But readership is not confined to those who peruse for prurient reasons because the poems speak to anyone who celebrates life, love, and language.
